For Malayalis, it’s more than just breakfast. It’s something familiar. Something that feels like home.

So we asked ourselves a slightly crazy question:

What if puttu became ice cream?

And that’s exactly what we made.

Introducing Puttu Ice Cream by Kiwi Premium — a playful take on Kerala’s iconic puttu, recreated as a layered ice cream with four completely different flavours: Arabian Delight, Pista, Pineapple and Strawberry.

We took inspiration from the unmistakable cylindrical form of traditional puttu and turned it into an ice cream experience. Instead of rice flour and coconut, you get layers of creamy ice cream — each bringing its own flavour and personality.

Why Puttu?

Because the best food ideas don’t always have to start from scratch. Sometimes, they start with something you already know.

We wanted to take that familiarity and look at it differently. Not recreate the taste of puttu. Reimagine the idea of puttu. The shape brings the nostalgia. The ice cream brings the surprise.  The Story Behind Kiwi’s Jackfruit and Mango Ice Cream

There were two trees in my grandmother’s courtyard, standing at opposite ends like old rivals who had somehow learned to share the same patch of earth. One was a jackfruit tree, old and stubborn and heavy branched, the kind of tree that never seemed to hurry. The other was a mango tree, restless and eager, throwing everything it had into fruit the moment the first warm days arrived.

The jackfruit tree believed in patience. A pod came down only when it was tender and ready, not a day before. Tender jackfruit was pale, mild, and faintly sweet, nothing like the deep yellow, heavy sweet variety people usually picture. The mango tree, a few steps away, had no such patience. It ripened loudly, its sweet perfume pulling every child outside before breakfast was even finished.

One power cut afternoon, my grandmother turned both trees into something new. Two metal tumblers, side by side. One pale gold and smooth, tasting of tender jackfruit’s soft, honeyed sweetness. The other bright and tangy, tasting exactly like the mango tree it came from, loud and impatient. Neither tried to be the other. Both were exactly right.

That same idea is what Kiwi’s Jackfruit and Mango Ice Cream is built on today, two separate flavours, each one true to where it comes from.

Why Tender Jackfruit Makes the Difference

Not all jackfruit works in ice cream. Overripe jackfruit is heavy and overpowering, and it drowns out everything else in the bowl. Kiwi uses tender, young jackfruit, sourced for its milder, naturally balanced sweetness. This is what gives our Jackfruit Ice Cream its smooth, gentle flavour instead of an overly sweet, one-note taste.

Why Real Mango Pulp Matters

Mango doesn’t need much help to taste good, it just needs to be handled right. Kiwi’s Mango Ice Cream is made with ripe mango pulp, folded in generously so the natural tang and colour come through in every scoop, rather than a synthetic flavour standing in for the real thing.

Made With Real Milk, Real Fruit

Every Kiwi flavour starts the same way, with real milk as the base and real fruit pulp folded in, not extracts or concentrates. It’s a simple standard, but one most mass-market ice creams skip.
